Tax Tips
- Drone equipment requires a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) registration and operational authorisation — these fees are fully deductible business costs.
- If you rent out equipment to other videographers, that income is taxable separately and equipment costs should be split accordingly.
- For large equipment purchases over £1,000, use the Annual Investment Allowance rather than written-down allowances to get full relief immediately.
- YouTube ad revenue and brand deal income from your own channel is taxable income — report it all on Self Assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim drone equipment costs?
Yes. Drones used for commercial video production are business equipment. You can claim the full purchase cost via the Annual Investment Allowance. Note that CAA registration and operational authorisation fees are also deductible.
Do I need a music licence for videos I produce for clients?
Yes. Music used in commercial video productions must be licensed for commercial use. Personal Spotify or streaming subscriptions do not provide commercial licences. Services like Artlist, Musicbed, or Epidemic Sound provide appropriate licences and are deductible.
Is YouTube channel income taxable?
Yes. AdSense revenue, Super Chat, channel memberships, and brand deals from your YouTube channel are all taxable trading income. Report all revenue sources on your Self Assessment return.
Are cloud rendering services deductible?
Yes. Cloud rendering services (AWS Renderfarm, GarageFarm, RebusFarm) used to render client videos are a deductible production cost. Keep invoices from the rendering platform as evidence.
