When does the New Zealand tax year start and end?
The New Zealand tax year runs from 1 April to 31 March the following year. For example, the 2024/25 tax year runs from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025. This is different from both the UK (6 April to 5 April) and Australia (1 July to 30 June). For sole traders, this means you report all income earned and expenses incurred between 1 April and 31 March on your IR3 Individual Income Tax Return. Most sole traders file their IR3 by 7 July following the end of the tax year.
