Worked Example: Irish Freelance Graphic Designer — €55,000 Income
- Gross income: €55,000 from freelance graphic design and branding work
- Allowable expenses: €10,000 (equipment €3,000, software €1,200, e-working relief €768, travel €2,100, professional fees €1,400, phone & broadband €640, training €892)
- Taxable profit: €55,000 − €10,000 = €45,000
- Income Tax: 20% on first €44,000 = €8,800 + 40% on €1,000 = €400. Total IT = €9,200
- Tax credits: €3,750 (Personal + Earned Income Tax Credits combined for 2025)
- Income Tax after credits: €9,200 − €3,750 = €5,450
- USC (2025 rates): 0.5% on €12,012 (€60.06) + 2% on €15,370 (€307.40) + 3% on €17,618 (€528.54) = €896.00
- PRSI Class S: 4.1% on income above €5,000 = 4.1% × €40,000 = €1,640
- Total tax liability: €5,450 + €896 + €1,640 = €7,986
- Take-home pay: €55,000 − €10,000 − €7,986 = €37,014
- Effective tax rate: €7,986 ÷ €45,000 = 17.7%
- Preliminary Tax: €7,986 × 90% = €7,187 due by 31 October via ROS
On €55,000 of freelance income with €10,000 in expenses, you would owe approximately €7,986 in Income Tax, USC, and PRSI. Your Preliminary Tax payment of €7,187 is due by 31 October (or 14 November if filing via ROS). If you miss claiming even €1,000 of those expenses and you’re in the higher band, your tax bill increases by up to €471 (at the 47.1% marginal rate of 40% IT + 3% USC + 4.1% PRSI).
