When does the Canadian tax year start and end?

Canada uses a calendar tax year, running from 1 January to 31 December each year. Your 2024 tax return covers income earned between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024. For self-employed individuals, the filing deadline for your T1 return is 15 June each year (following the tax year). However, any balance owing must be paid by 30 April to avoid interest charges. So you have until 15 June to file, but you must estimate and pay what you owe by 30 April. This differs significantly from the UK (6 April–5 April), Ireland (1 January–31 December with October filing), Australia (1 July–30 June), and New Zealand (1 April–31 March).

  • Calendar year: 1 January to 31 December
  • T1 filing deadline for self-employed: 15 June
  • Balance owing must be paid by 30 April (to avoid interest)
  • 2024 tax return due by 15 June 2025
  • Different from most other countries' tax years
